Contraindications & Cautions

Contraindications

Using a PEMF device coil directly over an implanted electronic device may cause contraindications. These may include pacemakers, defibrillators, cochlear implants, intrathecal pumps, and more. There is a chance these devices are listed by the manufacturer or by the doctor as being “MR conditional”. In this case, they may theoretically be able to be used in an MRI machine, up to about 15,000 gauss. Devices that are not MRI conditional should be considered contraindicated with PEMF therapy. In this case, the FlexPulse coil/s should not be used directly over the control unit of these implanted electronics. Keeping a distance of at least 1-2 feet away from the control unit with the FlexPulse coil/s should be considered. There is no risk with the implanted electronic leads. Once these MR conditional devices get old, they may still have the potential for being interfered with as they age, so, more caution is recommended in older implanted electronics.

PEMFs are contraindicated in organ transplant patients. This is because these people are on immune suppression medications to prevent organ rejection. We do not want to risk adversely affecting the immune suppression/rejection process. There is a chance that PEMFs may actually stimulate or activate a more aggressive rejection process by stimulating the immune system.

Warranty

Safety of PEMFs has not been established in pregnancy, although there is no evidence of harm. Most manufacturers warn against the use of their device during pregnancy.

PEMFs should be used with caution in Grave’s disease or in the case of active bleeding.

Extremely high intensity PEMFs should be used with caution or with professional guidance in people with implanted metals, such as joint replacements, dental implants, mechanical heart valves, metal stents, or metal staples in blood vessels. This is not due to risk of injury or harm, but because PEMFs extremely high intensities may stimulate the nerves in the area of the metal, causing sharp pain. High intensity PEMFs may add to the shear stress of metal clips placed in or near blood vessels.
